What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a stage 2, advanced trauma treatment that works by identifying, processing and actually releasing core sources of emotional distress, anxiety, dissociation, physical pain, and a variety of other challenging trauma related symptoms. This is a powerful, focused treatment that uses BioLateral music to support deep work within a contained, therapeutic space.

There are stages to trauma treatment?

Yes. Stage 1 trauma treatment typically uses traditional talk therapies such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to build safe coping skills, and develop self awareness of triggers and triggering.

Stage 2 trauma treatment typically uses brain-body based therapies such as Brainspotting, EMDR, or Somatic Experiencing to support the brain and the body in re-processing traumatic material. These mindfulness based modalities work to release data that is no longer relevant in your present day life, and properly store data that will help you continue to thrive in the future.

What makes Brainspotting so effective?

Even as little as 3 Brainspotting sessions can bring about the healing equivalent of 12 traditional talk therapy sessions. For a single incident event, that could be 3 weeks of therapy instead of 3 months! For more complex trauma, that could be 6 months of therapy instead of 2 years.

Because Brainspotting focuses on resourcing the nervous system throughout the therapeutic process, folx typically end sessions feeling more relaxed, grounded, and connected. If you have engaged in EMDR or another modality that has left you feeling triggered or activated at the end of session, you might consider Brainspotting.

One study found Brainspotting to be more effective than other modalities. EMDR and CBT patients reported their symptoms returning at the 6-month follow-up, while Brainspotting patients continued to get better following their treatment being over.

  • Yes, we do! Depending on the length of sessions and treatment goals, adjunct services typically require 6-12 sessions including the intake, Brainspotting sessions, and a transition session.

Adjunct Brainspotting therapy is brief and not meant to replace the current therapy process; rather, to supplement the primary therapeutic alliance with a focus on a specific treatment goal. It requires quick rapport-building with you and communication with your primary clinician.

  • 90 minute sessions are available, which means we could meet twice per month for 90 minute sessions instead of four times per month for 50 minute sessions. Depending on your goals, your schedule, and financial situation, extended sessions may be a better fit for you.

Due to the longer focus that extended sessions allow, treatment length could be reduced through this investment.

In regards to payment, insurance panels with OON Benefits may reimburse for the first hour of the session. If you wish to use your OON Benefits in this way, then a superbill can be provided to you. INN Insurance Benefits will not cover Extended Sessions.

We can accept FSAs and HSAs.

How do I know if I am ready for Brainspotting therapy?

Typically, you know you are finished with Stage 1 when you understand where your trauma comes from and you can identify your triggers and cope pretty well, but you are quite frustrated with how often you still get triggered, or how intense certain triggers are despite months and years of therapy.

If you aren’t sure, you can talk with your current therapist about it, or request a free initial consultation video call with us here.
